Genaugenommen bezeichnet das Wort Land¹ ein Gebiet (301-2), das Wort Volk² (siehe auch 333-3), Nation² einen Zusammenschluß von Menschen, die durch eine gemeinsame Tradition verbunden sind und auf demselben Gebiet leben, das Wort Staat³ eine politische Einheit. Es kommt jedoch nicht selten vor, daß diese Begriffe in ihrer Anwendung vermischt werden (so vor allem Staat und Land). Ein Staatenbund⁴, eine (Kon-)Föderation⁴ ist ein Zusammenschluß, bei dem die einzelnen Staaten ihre politische Souveränität behalten. Davon gilt es Bundesstaaten⁵, Bundesländer⁵ zu unterscheiden, dies sind die Gliedstaaten eines föderativen Staates. Als Territorium⁶ wird sowohl ganz allgemein ein bestimmtes Gebiet als auch das zu einem Staat oder einer bestimmten „Herrschaft” gehörende Gebiet bezeichnet. Daneben wird dieser Begriff gelegentlich für ein kolonisiertes Gebiet benutzt. Je nach dem Grad, in dem Gebiete, Territorien oder Regionen eine mehr oder weniger vollständige Unabhängigkeit haben, wird zwischen autonomen Regionen⁷, autonomen Territorien⁷ und nichtautonomen Regionen⁸, nichtautonomen Territorien⁸ unterschieden.
